Sherman Klump is a professor with a problem. Not only is he nutty and overweight, but he has inside him a character defect, like an extra personality that pops up at inconvenient times. Buddy Love as he is called is like the devil in us, that part of us that wants to spoil everything and stop us from being happy. Sherman is tired of Buddy embarrassing him in front of his girlfriend, Denise (Janet Jackson) so he uses an experimental technique to extract Buddy from his DNA and store him in a bottle. Unfortunately, there are two side effects. First, Sherman's brain becomes damaged and starts to deteriorate. Second, Buddy accidentally gets made human when a strand of hair lands on the goo that is his essence. Sherman is about to make the deal of a lifetime with a pharmaceutical company for his newly created youth potion, and Buddy wants to steal it and sell it himself. All of this is set against the backdrop of the crazy Klump family and all the silly antics that they get up to.
There is one really great part in this film which had me in hysterics, and that's the part where Sherman is dreaming that he has to save the earth from an asteroid collision. There are quite a few other very funny bits in the film, but unfortunately the story's stupidity somehow detracts from the comedy. It's a rather vulgar kind of comedy, and some of it's just childish 'toilet humour' and not very funny at all. But all in all, if you really like Eddie Murphy, you won't want to miss his amazing performance as the Klump family.
